In view of the necessity of PCO control for the new generation of premium lenses, the objective is to provide products for PCO reduction to be used in ophthalmic surgery for treatment of cataract and presbyopia. Two products are in development with potential to fulfil this objective. The products are based on an innovative surgical method, protected by two US patents, and additional patent applications. A trademark registration has been made in the US and EU. The first product, EpiLoop^®, is a disposable medical device with an estimated launch in 2008 in the USA. Pre-clinical results have shown a significant PCO reduction, and the project is now planning for clinical trials and preparing the technical file for FDA approval. The second product is a treatment kit based on a safe and efficient delivery of an agent solution that eliminates the epithelial cells inducing PCO. The project is aimed to offer complete PCO control with an injectible polymer IOL. The pre-clinical studies show good results of efficiency against PCO, and the treatment is functional and practically applicable.
