PhacoTreat is a company dedicated to ophthalmology and the area of cataract surgery and posterior capsular opacification (PCO), sometimes called secondary cataract. This phenomenon affects all patients after cataract surgery, of which 5 to 50% need to be treated by YAG-laser. We are developing an entirely new and patented concept for PCO-reduction, a concept which will enable cataract surgeons to greatly reduce, and possibly even eliminate, PCO. This is important since it will reduce the need for YAG-laser treatment which is potentially harmful for the retina, but it is also a prerequisite for the new generation of accommodating injectible polymer intraocular lenses.   Our aim is that the first product, EpiLoop^®, is launched in the US market by 2009, a unique instrument which may change the way many cataract surgeons handle PCO forever. A prospect of EpiLoop^® was presented at ESCRS Berlin, September 12-17. aiming at a deal before the end of 2008.
